Free Birth Plan Template
Introduction
And of all the decision making that goes along with motherhood, birth plans are one of the biggest. TBH, I thought up a basic template without columns during my first birth – and by that point I was in the final weeks of pregnancy. The emotions are strong as you begin to navigate the complicated mass of choices and options around your birth experience.
Based on my two completely different birth experiences, I’ve come up with an easy 2 step plan for creating your ideal birth plan: Firstly discuss everything including the FREE downloadable and printable Birth Plan template below with yourself first (as well as support people such a partner or close family) and then present it to your Midwife / Doctor & Support People like Doula/Student midwives etc.
The Birth Experience
The exciting, yet sometimes nerve-wracking be she is pregnant in the western world today and welcome your baby into this strange little royal village called childbirth. For most, we will only see a handful of childbirths in our lifetime as families shrink and communities become further apart — largely on TV or through the grapevine (in terrifying format).
It appears that there is immense societal and peer pressure: you have to be able to accomplish a drug free, pain-free, labour otherwise you are just an earth mama-turned-failure (or for those not living in Northern California failed modern-mammas) But birth is a natural process for which only very few interventions are needed if all goes well. However, the unknown nature of birth makes it important to plan and that can involve discussing fear with your midwife or health professional as well has managing expectations.
What is Included in a Birth Plan?
A birth plan should be so much more than a checklist … it is really your ideal vision of one of the most pivotal moments in all our lives. In the end it is your complete manual to what labor and delivery looks like for you. This includes the vibe of the room, to what kind interventions you want and much more within that huge spectrum of things one must decide.
It provides direction for your healthcare team, but it is also a brief outline of how you would like to be treated or cared and acting on any important issues. The only thing that matters in this context is it is a means of communications, not some mutual contract to the letter. It is about having a say in an often very un-nerving process.
A birth plan helps you describe your preferences in detail, including who will help support you and how to administer the medications and procedures as much as possible. That means it includes cultural and religious sensitivity; to understanding how your empowered parenting will fit in with, be respected or supported by these considerations. The plan, developed as a reference guide helps you make decisions and keeps everything in order during the several stages of planned physiological birth. Therefore, the information found in this book is meant to keep you informed and confident no matter what surprises might come your way during labor.
If nothing else, for many people a birth plan just helps with remembering that it is important to know your options when you go into labour and delivery so YOU can make the choices about YOUR body. This will help you to feel ready and less overwhelmed when the time comes, as this stage is likely an emotional one. In stating what you want in advance compels everyone involved with the process to engage as a team for your well-being – especially when it matters most.
When should I make my birth plan?
Making a birth plan is critical part of getting ready for your baby to have. Although the third trimester is considered to be when you should begin discussing and sharing your wishes for labor, it seems that during this time of grief or struggle we all want a quick solution. By now, you must-have talked to your doctor and probably been in a couple of antenatal classes. Topics include birth options, pain relief methods and postnatal care — basically everything a parent needs to know when it comes to supporting their child.
A birth plan should be made in the third trimester so you can take into account your health and any circumstances already going on as a result of pregnancy development. This is a time to decide if you would like another vaginal birth, are looking into trying for a VBAC or may potentially have your first cesarean. Organizing your thoughts into a clear, clean plan is the first step in having any communication be useful to you and your healthcare team both. With this partnership, you both produce your conception plan as a clear account of what helps and hinders nothing more than that — not an inflexible contract but a guide to help build your specific experience.
If you are running out of time and haven’t started on your birth plan, have no fear. There is no need of hurry as you can still ponder over your taste and do the changes if required. Use the third trimester to empower yourself with knowledge and get ready for that birth experience you envision, supported by professionals so you can walk into this one of your strongest moments.
Why is it important to create a birth plan
A Birth Plan is not just something to be checked off your pregnancy checklist, it’s the first step of having some feeling or power and say as you enter into labor. It is your voice, explaining fully how you imagine the birth of your baby and what kind of care would she want. This is not only a tool for you, but also your healthcare team and partner to be aware of the terminology and process that you wish. This process immerses you in the journey of your birth and, by doing so, gives you all the tools to research along with it that can make a whole world of difference on game day.

Deciding on a method of induction for childbirth is knowing the details, and how it will affect your birth plan.
Methods to Consider
Balloon Catheter or Foley Balloon: A small balloon is inserted into the cervix and then inflated; it helps to dilate (open up) as well, for labor.
Prostaglandin Gel or Tablets — Prostaglandins are hormones that can help ripen the cervix (making it softer and thinner). These are applied as gel, tablet or by suppository in the vagina.
Oxytocin (Pitocin): This is a synthetic hormone given through an IV to stimulate contractions and encourage the natural process of labor. It is an option usually considered after other approaches if labor needs to be induced.
